If you don’t have espresso, you can make this coffee shake with brewed coffee leftover will work too. Or if you have some instant coffee granules you can use a teaspoon of that and add milk as the base liquid to thin the milkshake out.

Ingredients For A Healthier Coffee Milkshake

  • Plain vanilla ice cream (you can use a regular ice cream or coffee flavored ice cream. I used a coconut based dairy free vanilla ice cream, because I can’t tolerate dairy).
  • Coffee or espresso, cold (or use instant coffee and milk instead).
  • Cream (optional) to cut some sugar and reduce the amount of ice cream. I used coconut cream, which is dairy free, but it’s up to you.
  • Frozen banana (for a thicker milkshake, or use ice).
  • Cacao powder (the chocolate flavor will enhance the coffee flavor even more).
  • Pinch of cinnamon (the spice hint will make it even more flavorful).

Note: Keep in mind that even though coffee has health benefits, when combined with ice cream and sugar this will not make it a healthy drink and should be consumed in moderation as an occasional treat.

Mocha Flavored Milk Shake

What makes this coffee milkshake really delicious is because it blends the flavors of chocolate and coffee; the addition of cinnamon will make it even more flavorful.

No Caffeine: This coffee milkshake can be made with decaffeinated espresso without sacrificing taste.

How To Make A Coffee Milkshake

Step 1. Prepare the ingredients: for easy-to-scoop ice cream, remove from the freezer 10 minutes before using. For a thicker shake use frozen banana, or if you prefer your milkshake without banana, use ice instead, or just leave it out. And don’t forget to chill your glasses. This will ensure the coffee milkshake stays cold as long as possible.

Pro Tip For A Perfect Milk Shake Texture

The ratio for real nice, thick milk shake you need about 14-16 ounces of ice cream (solid ingredients) and 2 ounces of liquid ingredients (coffee/ espresso/ or other liquid like milk).

Coffee Milkshake Substitutions/Add-ins:

  • Make this coffee milk shake dairy free or vegan: There are many non-dairy alternatives to milk and ice cream. For creamier results use a coconut based ice cream or cashew based ice cream (plain vanilla flavor). If you are bothered by the ingredients used in these store-bought ice creams, then you can make your own healthier homemade vegan ice cream without added sugar. And use that as a base in the shake.
  • If you prefer to make your coffee milk shake without ice cream entirely then use more frozen bananas and add some coconut cream for thickness.
  • Add seeds: chia seeds, hemp seeds or milled flax seeds for fiber and plant based protein.
  • For thicker texture, add some peanut butter or or other nut butters.

What Blender To Use For A Milkshake

Any blender that has a “frozen drink” set up, this usually pulses a few times to make things move a bit and then blends on low without breaking the consistency. Here I’m using a beast blender with smaller cups, which is very convenient for single serving smoothies and drinks.

Storing The Coffee Milkshake

Storing leftovers: Store in an airtight container in the freezer. It will turn to ice-cream. Consume the milkshake within 1 to 2 months after it’s frozen.

To defrost: a milkshake that’s frozen solid you need to move it from the freezer to the fridge for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. If it separates you can re-blend.
